What is Diclofenac?

Diclofenac is a potent NSAID that’s highly effective for treating pain and inflammation from various musculoskeletal conditions. Available in both oral and topical forms, it provides flexible treatment options while requiring careful attention to cardiovascular and gastrointestinal risks.

Book an online consultation if you’re experiencing joint pain, muscle inflammation, or injury-related pain that may benefit from anti-inflammatory treatment. Our GPs can assess your symptoms and determine if Diclofenac is appropriate while considering your individual risk factors.

What is Diclofenac used for?

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Acute musculoskeletal injuries
  • Back pain and sciatica
  • Sports injuries
  • Post-operative pain
  • Migraine (specific formulations)
  • Topical use for localized pain

How does Diclofenac work?

A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, reducing prostaglandin production and thereby decreasing pain, inflammation, and fever.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is topical Diclofenac safer than tablets?

Yes, topical Diclofenac has much lower systemic absorption and fewer side effects, making it safer for localized pain and inflammation.

Can I take Diclofenac with paracetamol?

Yes, paracetamol can be safely combined with Diclofenac and may provide better pain relief than either medication alone.

Why do I need to be careful about heart risks?

All NSAIDs, including Diclofenac, can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, especially with long-term use or in people with existing heart disease.

How long can I safely use Diclofenac?

For acute pain, use for the shortest time possible (usually 3-7 days). For chronic conditions, your GP will monitor you regularly and reassess the need periodically.
