What is Fexofenadine?

Fexofenadine is a modern, non-drowsy antihistamine that’s particularly effective for hay fever and chronic allergic conditions. It’s considered one of the safest and most effective antihistamines available, with minimal side effects and no sedating properties.

Book an online consultation if you’re experiencing persistent allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, or skin reactions that are affecting your quality of life. Our GPs can assess your symptoms and determine if Fexofenadine or other allergy treatments are appropriate for your specific needs.

What is Fexofenadine used for?

  • Hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis)
  • Perennial allergic rhinitis
  • Chronic urticaria (hives)
  • Allergic skin reactions
  • Pet allergies
  • Dust mite allergies
  • Food allergy symptoms (as adjunct treatment)

How does Fexofenadine work?

A second-generation antihistamine that selectively blocks H1 histamine receptors without crossing the blood-brain barrier, providing effective allergy relief without causing drowsiness.

Dosage and Administration

Adults

120 mg once daily, or 180 mg once daily for chronic urticaria.

Children

Children 6-12 years: 30 mg twice daily. Children 2-6 years: 30 mg once daily.

Important Notes

  • Take on an empty stomach—avoid taking with fruit juices.
  • Best taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after food.
  • Can be taken at any time of day as it doesn't cause drowsiness.
  • Regular daily use during allergy season for best prevention.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects

  • Headache
  • Back pain
  • Cough
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Menstrual cramps (in women)
  • Generally very well tolerated

Serious Side Effects

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

  • Severe allergic reactions (rare)
  • Heart rhythm changes (very rare)
  • Sleep disturbances (uncommon)

Important Warnings

  • Generally one of the safest antihistamines with minimal side effects.
  • Tell your GP if you have severe kidney disease—dose adjustment may be needed.
  • Avoid taking with large amounts of fruit juice as it reduces absorption.
  • Safe for long-term use during allergy seasons.
  • Does not usually cause drowsiness or impair driving ability.

Drug Interactions

Tell your GP if you're taking any of the following medications:

  • Fruit juices (especially apple, orange, grapefruit)—reduce absorption significantly.
  • Antacids containing aluminum and magnesium—take 2 hours apart.
  • Generally fewer drug interactions than older antihistamines.
  • Safe to use with most other medications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Fexofenadine considered non-drowsy?

Unlike older antihistamines, Fexofenadine doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier easily, so it doesn't affect the brain areas that cause drowsiness.

Can I take Fexofenadine every day during hay fever season?

Yes, it's designed for daily use and is most effective when taken regularly throughout the allergy season rather than just when symptoms appear.

Why should I avoid fruit juice with Fexofenadine?

Fruit juices, especially apple and orange juice, can reduce the absorption of Fexofenadine by up to 70%, making it much less effective.

How does Fexofenadine compare to Cetirizine or Loratadine?

All three are effective non-drowsy antihistamines. Fexofenadine may cause the least drowsiness and is least likely to interact with other medications.
