What is Mometasone?

Mometasone is a potent topical corticosteroid available as creams, ointments, and nasal sprays. It’s highly effective for treating inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and allergic nasal conditions like hay fever.

What is Mometasone used for?

  • Eczema and dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
  • Nasal polyps
  • Severe inflammatory skin conditions

How does Mometasone work?

A potent corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, itching, and immune responses in the skin and nasal passages when applied topically.

Dosage and Administration

Adults

Apply thin layer to affected skin once daily, or 2 sprays per nostril once daily for nasal use.

Children

Children over 2 years—use under medical supervision with lower potency formulations preferred.

Important Notes

  • Use sparingly—a thin layer is sufficient.
  • For skin: apply to clean, dry skin and rub in gently.
  • For nasal spray: shake well before use and prime if first use.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after application (unless treating hands).

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can I use Mometasone safely?

For skin conditions, usually 2-4 weeks maximum. For nasal spray, can be used longer term but requires regular review. Prolonged use increases risk of side effects.

Can I use Mometasone on my face?

Only if specifically prescribed by your GP. Facial skin is thinner and more prone to side effects from potent steroids.

Why shouldn't I use it on infected skin?

Steroids can suppress local immune responses and may worsen infections. If infection is suspected, antimicrobial treatment is needed first.

Is it normal for my skin to sting when I first apply it?

Mild stinging is common initially, especially on inflamed skin. If severe burning persists, stop use and contact your GP.
