What is Naproxen?

Naproxen is a long-acting non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat pain, inflammation, and fever. It’s particularly effective for musculoskeletal pain, arthritis, and menstrual pain, providing relief for up to 12 hours per dose.

Book an online consultation if you’re experiencing persistent pain or inflammation that may benefit from anti-inflammatory treatment. Our GPs can assess your condition and determine if Naproxen is safe and appropriate for you.

What is Naproxen used for?

  • Arthritis and joint pain
  • Back pain and sciatica
  • Menstrual pain (dysmenorrhoea)
  • Muscle strains and sprains
  • Dental pain
  • Gout attacks
  • Post-operative pain
  • Headaches and migraines

How does Naproxen work?

A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that reduces inflammation, pain, and fever by blocking cyclooxygenase enzymes that produce prostaglandins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why must I take Naproxen with food?

Food helps protect your stomach lining from irritation. Taking NSAIDs on an empty stomach significantly increases the risk of stomach ulcers and bleeding.

How is Naproxen different from ibuprofen?

Naproxen lasts longer (12 hours vs 6-8 hours for ibuprofen) so you need fewer doses, but it may have slightly higher risks of stomach and heart side effects.

Can I take Naproxen for a hangover headache?

It's not recommended. Alcohol already irritates your stomach, and NSAIDs can make this worse. Paracetamol is safer for hangover headaches.

How long can I safely take Naproxen?

For acute pain, usually 5-7 days. For chronic conditions like arthritis, longer use requires regular GP monitoring for side effects.
