What is Tranexamic Acid?

Tranexamic acid is a highly effective antifibrinolytic medication that’s particularly valuable for managing heavy menstrual bleeding and preventing excessive bleeding in various medical situations. Its ability to stabilize blood clots makes it an essential tool for bleeding disorders.

Book an online consultation if you’re experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding, need bleeding management for dental procedures, or have concerns about excessive bleeding. Our GPs can assess your bleeding patterns and determine if Tranexamic acid is appropriate while evaluating your clotting risk factors.

What is Tranexamic Acid used for?

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia)
  • Bleeding after tooth extraction or surgery
  • Hereditary angioedema
  • Post-partum haemorrhage prevention
  • Trauma-related bleeding
  • Bleeding in patients on anticoagulants
  • Epistaxis (nosebleeds)
  • Local fibrinolysis conditions

How does Tranexamic Acid work?

An antifibrinolytic agent that inhibits plasminogen activation and plasmin activity, preventing the breakdown of fibrin clots and reducing bleeding by stabilizing blood clots once formed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How effective is Tranexamic acid for heavy periods?

Studies show it can reduce menstrual blood loss by up to 40-50%, making it one of the most effective non-hormonal treatments for heavy menstrual bleeding.

How quickly does it work for bleeding?

It starts working within hours of taking it, but maximum effect for menstrual bleeding may take 2-3 cycles of regular use during periods.

Is it safe to use every month for heavy periods?

Yes, it's safe to use during each menstrual cycle, but only take it during the days of heavy bleeding, not continuously throughout the month.
